Mississippi DOC Release Paths
Mississippi Department of Corrections facilities form a statewide system. No state prison was identified inside Panola County in the official MDOC facility directory. A person convicted in Panola may be housed far from the county, moved between institutions, held in a regional or county facility for MDOC, placed in a restitution center, or assigned to community corrections. The current location and location-change date therefore matter more than the county jail roster once the person has been committed to state custody.
Leaving a prison building does not always end the sentence. Parole, earned-release supervision, post-release supervision, and other community placements allow physical release subject to conditions. Final discharge ends MDOC custody and supervision. A transfer to another institution remains custody. Record both facts: whether the person is outside secure confinement and whether MDOC control remains active.
Confirm Mississippi DOC Release
The MDOC offender search is the public first check for a state sentence. It accepts a name or MDOC identification number. The number is more reliable because punctuation, aliases, and similar names can change results. Open the detail record and compare at least two identifiers before interpreting the status.
- Search the full legal name or MDOC number and open the matching detail result.
- Verify the date of birth and county of conviction. Panola as county of conviction identifies the prosecution, not the release site.
- Record the exact location, unit, location-change date, sentence lines, and Tentative Release Date.
- Read parole, earned-release supervision, community corrections, and discharge as different statuses.
- Request a discharge certificate or public status verification when an actual completed release must be documented.
A no-prison location can be meaningful, but it is not enough by itself. Parole or earned-release supervision means the person may live outside a prison while remaining an MDOC offender. The public detail combines identity, custody, and sentence facts. Each field answers a limited question. It does not display the complete time-computation worksheet, and its projected date should not be treated as a historical certificate.

Use the labels literally. “Parole” describes conditional release after a custodial sentence. “Earned-release supervision,” or ERS, is another state correctional status outside secure confinement. “Probation” is court-ordered supervision and may occur without a state-prison stay. “Discharge” indicates completion of the state correctional term. These are not interchangeable.

Mississippi DOC Tentative Release Dates
MDOC uses the exact label “Tentative Release Date.” The calculation can reflect controlling sentences, recognized jail credit, concurrent or consecutive terms, parole and earned-time eligibility, disciplinary loss, detainers, and administrative processing. New orders, added sentences, credit corrections, or revocation can change it. The public result is MDOC's present computation, not an appointment or proof that a person exited on that date.
Mississippi law does not support one safe release calculator for every sentence. Sections 47-5-138 and 47-5-139 govern parts of earned time and forfeiture. Section 47-7-3 controls parole eligibility and exclusions, while other laws set offense and date rules. The common 85/15 phrase reflects rules that apply to some categories, not a promise for every person convicted in Panola County. Read the current statute with the sentence and offense date.
The MDOC inmate handbook describes time computation and related dates. For an actual past event, the discharge certificate, parole order, and status record are stronger than an old projected date.
Mississippi DOC Release Supervision
MDOC's Types of Supervision page defines parole, probation, Interstate Compact supervision, intensive supervision, and ERS. An ERS date does not guarantee release. Conduct, classification, an approved in-state residence, and other conditions can affect the result. Someone on ERS remains under MDOC jurisdiction even while outside prison.

Those labels help separate physical release from final discharge. Request Mississippi DOC Discharge Records
A public search is fast, but a formal state record is stronger for completion. Ask for a named discharge certificate, public status verification, or releasable time-computation record. Include the MDOC number and make clear whether the request concerns a tentative calculation or an actual discharge. MDOC lists parole and probation field-officer files among exempt material, so a narrow request for a specific nonexempt record is more useful than a demand for the entire supervision file.
The MDOC public-records policy requires a written, signed request that sufficiently identifies the records and provides the requester's name, address, and telephone. It states that telephone requests are not accepted. The policy provides for a written response within seven working days. When material can be produced, MDOC may issue an estimate and normally produce it within fourteen working days after request and payment unless more time is needed. Published charges include $0.15 per page, labor after the first hour at the rate of the lowest-qualified worker, technology or vendor costs, and mailing. Ask for reasonably separable portions and the legal basis for any withholding.
Mississippi DOC Release Travel
MDOC's release guidance says the assigned case manager verifies the release plan and communicates the exact date. The process can take 30 to 45 days, and a discharge certificate must issue before release. When a person requests bus travel, MDOC may buy an in-state ticket to the destination or nearest city. MDOC does not buy out-of-state travel.

The travel provision belongs only to an MDOC release. It must not be promised to someone leaving the Panola County Detention Center on bond, time served, dismissal, or a county sentence.

The Parole Board makes parole decisions. None of those offices replaces the sheriff's jail docket for a Panola County jail release.

A focused question about discharge, active supervision, or a tentative date reaches the correct unit more quickly than a broad request for every file.
Questions about parole eligibility belong with the Mississippi State Parole Board, while MDOC carries out custody status and Community Corrections handles field supervision.
Panola MDOC Release Identity Checks
A common name should never be matched to a state release by name alone. Pair the MDOC number with date of birth whenever possible. Then compare county of conviction, offense, sentence date, and entry date. A photograph may help flag a mismatch, but it cannot resolve identity by itself. Panola as the county of conviction is useful only after the other identifiers agree.
Keep a brief log of the exact query, access date and time, result wording, location-change date, and Tentative Release Date. If a later check differs, retain both observations and ask MDOC which record controls.
